Illustrator

Seems I have forgotten to express my latest obsession - Illustration.

When Jon Burgerman came in to the college to talk through his work in 2010 I was fascinated by him and his art. Years previously I had seen an exhibition of his and loved it but not until I heard him talk did I really understand. Recently I have had an assignment in which I have learnt the basic techniques of drawing lines and shapes within illustrator, which i have long wished to know how to do but previously failed miserably.

I have subtly tried to experiment in the past with adding a graphical element to my photography and think that the introduction to illustration coupled with the latest assignment of designing a class produced zine are going to not only improve my photographic work but increase my ever growing interest in working between intersecting fields of media. These are the sort of additional skills I was hoping to inherit by choosing this course over others.

I already have ideas

but for now, these are my first attempts at creating some minimalist movie poster designs.

Heston's edible wallpaper

Heston Blumenthal's mind boggling creation of edible wallpaper - my inspiration for this years student Fujifilm competition, all about senses.

I was lucky enough to get to speak to Lorna from Rhubarb Rhubarb today and receive some valuable feedback which I will certainly take onboard when considering things coming up such as Freerange. I received feedback about my work that I had not heard before which was interesting and it was great to be told straight the sort of things I should be doing, working on and thinking about in corrolation to where my work is at.

After seeing my Halloween photographs she told me about a very interesting photographer, Vee Speers. Vee's "Happy Birthday" work is stunningly dark and creepy. So after getting home and looking at this work I have been thinking about what I should do with my work. Vee's happy birthday photographs are a collection which make sence and tell you things, they are interesing and flow together, where as my halloween photographs are a trio and sit in my portfolio not saying a great deal. My work is a synopsis, her work is a novel, and this is the same for all of my work at the moment.

After today I believe I have a much stronger understanding of my work and know which projects I should run with and go deeper into the subject matter.

As a student and as someone new to the photography world there can be days when I find myself questioning why am I doing this? and if what I am doing is relevant. Today I was informed that 5000 students a year graduate as photographers...which kinda puts into perspective the work that will need to be done in order to get anywhere in this profession. Pretty daunting statistics!
